Ugandan Government should not scrap Press freedom
Translations available in: English (original) | French | Spanish | Italian | German | Portuguese | Swedish | Russian | Dutch | Arabic

Uganda has been a country greatly credited for the fight against HIV/AIDS. Our president has gone along way to support programs that promote mass education on the related issue. The government too has scored high in areas of democracy and development. Its a country that is growing and moving fast. However recently the government has proposed to scrap press freedom. This means that the press will not have freedom of publications. To me this is a great blander which should not happen. The press has played a great role in the fight for human rights in Uganda by exposing the atrocities committed by security agencies.for example toture room (safe houses), corruption cases among others. Recently reknown journalist Andrew Mwenda was arrested and his offices vandalised by security agencies. This shows how bad the situation is in the country. However Uganda too is not the only country affected. I believe many journalists are affected and this is the time to stand up and fight for press freedom.

Africa should love her Culture
Related to country: Uganda

Translations available in: English (original) | French | Spanish | Italian | German | Portuguese | Swedish | Russian | Dutch | Arabic

Culture plays a big role in shaping our backgrounds and identities, yet in Africa, our cultures have been abused and supressed by the west-'modern life'. In the past culture played a great role in shaping morals and keeping unity among people. Not only did it instill dicpline among the people but it also strengthened unity and coo-operation amongst other cultures. The influence of the west has however led to the weakening of African culture and of course giving way to bad vices. Take an example of sex before marriage, Same sex marriages, early preganancies e.t.c. All these were abominations in the community. The seed planted by the colonialists has greatly given way to the fast spread of HIV/AIDS, corruption, and hazards caused by environmental degradation simply because people want to survive.

The west culture has got some good and bad things which i do appreciate. Take an example of the office dress code. Majority of Africans have adopted it and its good. But its time for the west to learn from Africa as well. African culture is good and i do encourage those that have not visited Africa to come and find out yourselves. Africa is a beautiful continent. My country Uganda is a cool place to be. We have over 20 tribes with cultural leaders. Culture has contributed alot to the unity in our country. Its high time Africans appreciated their origin and identity.
